Nel 1953 fu assegnato a Ernest Hemingway con Il vecchio e il mare; l' anno successivo sarebbe toccato a Giovanni Guareschi e, via via, al Pasternak de Il dottor Zivago o al Singer de La famiglia Moskat. Un tempo, un altro giornalista, Giorgio Bocca, anch'egli di passaggio a Pontremoli nella sua rubrica su L'Espresso - cito a memoria - scriveva: "mi hanno portato un piatto di pan bagnato condito con pesto, accompagnandolo con un vinello pallido e acidulo che definirlo vino era davvero troppo". Era un invito a non indulgere al culto ossessivo della tradizione o alla celebrazione ad occhi bendati della cucina povera. Era trent'anni fa o giù di lì.
E'assai diverso il taccuino di viaggio di Carlo Petrini, fondatore di Slow Food, nei giorni scorsi a Pontremoli. Sembra portare con sé, come fosse una bussola, una frase del Talmud: "Colui che non ha la terra sotto i piedi non è un uomo". Con occhi esercitati al contatto con la terra, con le sue radici e i suoi germogli, offre una lettura di questo nostro paese che incanta e lusinga oltre misura. Ed al di là delle elegiache visioni il legame con la terra è assolutamente reale.
